Description

IDE HIGH STREET (west side), Ide
SX 89 SE

1/89 No. 12
4.4.78
GV II

Small house. Probably late C18. Whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings;
thatched roof gabled at ends; end stacks with brick shafts.
2 rooms wide with heated rooms on either side of a central stair with narrow
unheated service rooms to the rear. The service rooms are probably integral. A
weatherboarded single-storey lean-to adjoining the right end may be a later addition
providing extra service rooms.
2 storeys. Front elevation unexpectedly tall for a small village house with a deep
thatched roof. Symmetrical 2 window front with regular fenestration and central
front door under a thatched porch carried on posts. Front door with fielded panels,
top panels glazed. C20 2-light casements, 2 panes per light. A small area of
pitched stones separates the front elevation from the High Street pavement.
Interior: The plan is largely intact except for the rear left service room which has
been incorporated into the front left room. C20 grates.
No. 12 forms a group with nos. 16 and 18 (qv). An undated photograph in Rowland's
Ide shows a blocked window in the centre above the porch.

Rowland, Ide (1985) p.17.
