Description

CLYST HYDON
ST 00 SW
2/29 White Cottage
-
GV II

Cottage. C18 or early C19. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble
and brick stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: small 2-room plan cottage facing south. The larger room is the left (west)
one and it has an axial stack backing onto the right room. The right room has an
end stack but this is a C20 insertion. The stairs are C20 and positioned to rear of
the right room. 2 storeys with secondary lean-to outshots to rear and on the right
end.
Exterior: not quite symmetrical 2-window front. The ground floor windows are UPVC
casements with glazing bars dating from circa 1986. The first floor windows are C19
casements with glazing bars, the left one with unusually small rectangular panes.
The roof is tall and steeply pitched and hipped each end.
Interior: no carpentry detail is exposed and the fireplaces are blocked by C20
grates. The roof was not available for inspection at the time of this survey.
White Cottage forms part of an attractive group of listed buildings in Clyst Hydon
village.
