Description

SY 18 NE BRANSCOMBE BRANSCOMBE

7/36 Nos. 1 and 2 Cliff View Cottages
- (formerly listed as Nos. 1, 2 and
21.ll.78 3 Cliff View Cottages)
GV II

2 cottages, formerly 3 cottages. Probably late C18 - early C19, thoroughly
renovated in 1978. Plastered stone rubble, maybe some cob; stone rubble stacks
topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof, replaced with slate to rear.
Plan: pair of contemporary cottages facing south-east. No. 1 is the left (south-
west) cottage and it has a 2-room plan. No. 2 is the right cottage and it has a 3-
room plan. There is an axial stack in the party wall between the cottages which
serves back-to-back fireplaces. The left room of No. 1 has a rear corner stack. No.
2 occupies 2 former cottages. In 1978 No. 3 Cliff View Cottages was incorporated
into No. 3. It was a 1-room plan cottage at the right end. Any stack it had is now
disused. Both cottages are 2 storeys with probably integral outshots across the
rear.
Exterior: overall 5-window front of C19 and C20 replacement casements with glazing
bars. The 3 original doorways still remain and all contain 1978 doors; the outer
ones are plank doors and the centre one is glazed. The roof is gable-ended to right
and half-hipped to left.
Interior was not available for inspection at the time of this survey although it is
reported that the little carpentry which is exposed is plainly-finished.
