Description

HALBERTON
SS 90 NE
4/160 Lower Ford Farmhouse
-
GV II
Farmhouse. Mid-C19 remodelling of an earlier house. Cob, stone plinth, plastered,
under gabled-end slate roof, with rubble stone rear wings. Formerly a 3-room,
through-passage plan; end stacks, brick shafts. 2-storeys.
Front: symmetrical 4-window range; all windows C19, of 3-lights, 21 leaded panes per
light. Central latticework porch; wide planked door. The right hand rear wing is
the older of the 2; it has been widened, probably in the C19; 4-light openings to
each floor with stanchions and internal shutters, the outer face with two 3-light
windows to first floor, 2 of 2-lights to ground floor. One 3-light casement window
to each floor of the other rear wing. Evidence of former stairwell built into
thickness of left-hand end chimney. Rear door to passage blocked. The attractive
remodelling of the mid-C19 with its complete fenestration of the period at the front
contributes to the interest of what is a considerably earlier house.
