Description

KNOWSTONE
SS 82 SW
3/20 West Bowden Farmhouse
-
- II
Farmhouse. Late C16 or early C17 but earlier fabric may well be concealed.
Rendered stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof to main range with small section of
corrugated asbestos at left end. Brick shaft to stone rubble stacks at each gable
end and axial brick stack.
Plan: as interior not accessible, the plan and development were not fully
recoverable. The main range clearly consists of a 3-room-and-cross-passage plan,
with lower end to right and axial hall stack backing onto the passage. However, at
the left upper end is an additional room, probably an extension but certainly of C17
date, with separate direct entry and possibly originally intended for separate
occupation. Continuous single storey outshut to rear.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 5-window range. All late C19 or early C20 fenestration, all 3
light casements 3 panes per light to main range except for a 2-light casement above
and just to left of cross-passage doorway which has 6 panelled door and early C20
latticed porch with corrugated asbestos roof. Two 2-light casements at left end, 2
panes per light, and plank door.
Interior: not accessible, but believed to be entirely unspoilt in C20. The
farmhouse is isolated, has no farm drive and is situated in a particularly unspoilt
farmstead.
