Detached cottage. C17. Rendered rubble or cob, thatched roof. A 3-room
dwelling with large ridge stack backing on cross passage; to left is a swept-
down section of roof over former out-building. Two storeys: at ground floor a
3-light and 2-light C20 casement to left of plank door in peaked head on 5-stone
step, to right a 3-light with horizontal bars and a small 2-light. Between the
windows right of door a large raking buttress inserted in C20. First floor has
a 3-light to eyebrow, a 2-light C19 with bars at eaves, and small 2-light to
eyebrow. Right return is plain, left return has stone buttress or former flue,
both ends of roof hipped. At back is projecting stair turret with casement and
an eaves casement; to right are French doors and a further eaves casement. A
flat-roofed extension not of special interest. Interior: a square framed timber
frame partition to left of cross passage, 3 rough chamfered beams, bressummer
fireplace, spiral stone stair, blocked window. There is a squint-like low
opening by the fireplace. Roof is pegged collar.
A photograph on p.11 of the Kingston History Society booklet (1980) 'Kingston: A
South Hams Village' shows the front of Ivy Cottage before later C20 modifica-
tion. Much of the front wall appears to be in cob, and there is no buttress.
