SJ 55 NE SPURSTOW C.P. WHITCHURCH ROAD

2/71 Wood Cottages

Cottage, early C17 with alterations and additions. Plastered timber
frame with thatched roof. 2 storeys, 4 window bays. A wing (north)
forms an "L" shaped plan. The east gable has very close-set studding
with rail only to window head. There are angle braces to the slightly
jettied gable apex, which has timbers in the chevron style. Modern
boarded door in added porch. Replaced mullion windows have casements
with leaded lattice glazing, those at first floor level in gabled half
dormers. Walls generally rendered brickwork with few timbers exposed.
Interior: Ovolo moulded and bevelled beams and exposed joists.
Exposed purlins with wind braces.
