Probably a house originally, then shelter sheds and granary (when surveyed), now dwelling. C16 or early C17;
extended and altered C18 and early C19. Random rubble with Welsh slate and
stone slate roof. Two storeys, approx. 70ft long. Walls 3½ - 4 ft. thick. Irregular
openings and fenestration including on the ground floor two C18 shallow brick
segmental arches and two C19 stone segmental arches, also one blocked small C16
window with roll-moulded surround. On the first floor one small window with
roll-moulded surround, two early C17 windows with multi-moulded surrounds and two with
double-chamfered surrounds. Steeply-pitched gabled roof with flat coping and
kneelers on right gable.
INTERIOR: on ground floor a very large blocked segmental-arched fireplace;
also massive ceiling beams, some of them re-set. On the first floor, at the east
end two C17 fireplaces, one now blocked, the other a door into later building
behind. 9-bay roof with heavy timbers, some of them re-used; all are principal-
rafter trusses with tie beams but they differ considerably in detail. The
first, to the east has a thin saddle and ridge post supporting the ridge piece;
the 2nd has a saddle; the 3rd a king post; 4th - 8th have collar beams and the
principals joined with a notched lap joint; the 9th, now embedded in C19 end
wall, has queen struts.
There appears to be no documentary evidence for the origins and original function
of the building.
