Description

SS 43 NE GEORGEHAM NETHERHAM'S HILL, Geogeham

7/142 Speedwell House and adjoining
- outbuilding to west

GV II

Farmhouse with attached outbuilding now house and garage with loft over. House C16
possibly earlier origins refenestrated in C19, when the outbuilding was also
probably added. House rubble with some cob, whitewashed roughcast rendered.
Wheat-reed thatch roof with gable ends. Brick stacks at each gable and axial
rubble stack. Outbuilding of rubble with lower ridge roofed in corrugated iron.
House now 3 cell plan but upper end appears to be late C18 or C19 addition, the
original dwelling probably open hall with floor inserted in late C16. The
outbuilding adjoins at left gable end forming continuous range built into bank. 2
storeys. 5-window range of 2-light casements 2 panes each. Off-centre C20 door
with 2-light window 2 panes per light to left and French window and 2-light
casement 3 panes each light to right. Pair of raised crucks set low over hall
suggests it may have originally been open to roof but no access to roof space
except to separate loft at upper end with two probably C19 trusses. Outbuilding
has round-arched window above garage doors at gable end and raised loft door under
raking dormer to rear.
