Description

LUPPITT BEACON
ST 10 NE
6/72 Little Thatch, Prings Cottage and
- Wainwrights Cottage
- II
Row of 3 cottages. Probably late C18 - early C19. Plastered local stone rubble,
maybe with some cob; stone rubble stacks with plastered brick chimneyshafts; thatch
roof.
Plan: row of 3 cottages facing south-south-west, say south. The cottages are
probably contemporary and although all 3 have a 2-room plans with one heated and one
unheated room they each have different layouts. Little Thatch is at the left (west)
end and it shares and axial stack with the middle cottage, Prings Cottage.
Wainwrights Cottage is at the right (east) end and it has an axial stack between the
2 rooms. The right end room here has been enlarged into a former forge in a
crosswing projecting to rear. This is open to the roof but the rest of the row is 2
storeys with secondary rear outshots and service extensions.
Exterior: irregular front fenestration. Each cottage has 3 ground floor windows,
the end cottage has 1 first floor window each and Prings Cottage has 3 first floor
windows. These are a variety of C20 casements with glazing bars. Each cottage
front doorway contains a C20 door and thatch-roofed porch.
Interiors: have plain carpentry detail where exposed.
