Villa, in use as retirement home. Circa 1840-50, said to have been built for the
steward to the Powderham Estate (information from owner) and probably contemporary
with the alterations to Powderham Castle being carried out for the 10th Earl of Devon
by Charles Fowler. Snecked grey limestone; slate roofs, gabled at ends; stone stacks
with tall stone chimney shafts in groups with brattished caps. Tudor style.
Plan: Double depth main block, approximately rectangular on plan, the north and east
elevations facing the garden with an entrance on the south side and a service wing to
the north. The main block is double depth with an entrance hall leading into the
central stair hall.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window south front to the main block with a
gabled porch with a chamfered 2-centred arched stone doorframe, original timber door
and decorated floor tiles; projecting stack with set-offs to right of centre with
tall paired shafts; 2- and 3-light C19 timber transomed casements with hoodmoulds.
The east elevation has 2 projections, gabled to the front; the left hand projection
has a canted bay with an ornamental slate roof with wrought iron cresting. C20 door
inserted in centre, below the large C19 3-light transomed stair window with a hood
mould: other windows C19 2- and 3-light transomed casements with hoodmoulds. The
north elevation has a gabled projection to the front at the left with a C20 canted
bay copied from the bay on the east side with a French window and 2- and 3-light C19
transomed casements.
Interior: Original features survive including plaster cornices, joinery, marble
chimneypieces and a C19 main stair with chamfered stick balusters and a ramped
wreathed handrail: the service wing includes a stick baluster service stair with a
ramped handrail.
