Gate, Castle Howard)
GV I

Gateway to Castle Howard demesne, and flanking wall with end turrets. Early
C18 by Vanbrugh or Hawksmoor. Limestone rubble brough to course. Round-
arched triple-keyed gateway beneath open pediment flanked by square
rusticated piers each surmounted by pyramids. Battlemented wall to either
side running approximately 30 metres and terminating in buttressed circular
2-stage mock medieval turrets with cruciform arrow slits and battlements.
