Description

THIRKLEBY HIGH AND LOW -
SE 48 SE WITH OSGODBY

1/54 Front garden wall to High
Osgodby Grange
GV II
Garden wall. Early-mid C18. Coursed squared stone with segment-sectioned ashlar
coping. Front wall approximately 1 metre high with steps up to gateway in line
with house door; on either side of this the wall ramps up and is surmounted by later,
stepped, hemispherical tapstones. On right of gateway, wall ramps up to meet taller
return wall which dies in house and has chamfered plinth and on garden side three
round-arched, semi-domed niches with keyed archivolts. On left of gateway the wall
continues and ramps down, at which point it returns to the house as a low-level
garden retaining wall; beyond the ramp there is a break in the masonry before the
wall returns rearwards, ramping up once before dying in outbuilding (not of special
interest)
