Description

HELSTON

SW62NW BREAGE ROAD
631-1/1/10 Bank barn and attached cart shed at
25/07/79 Methleigh Farm
(Formerly Listed as:
BREAGE ROAD
Farmyard buildings including
watermill at Methleigh)

GV II

Large bank barn. Mid C19. Killas and granite rubble with
granite dressings; grouted scantle slate hipped roof. L-shaped
plan with mill leat and wheel pit of mill (qv) in space
between rear of barn and bank, part of a planned farmyard. 2
storeys; 2x2-window fronts to inner angles. Most windows with
diagonally set wooden stanchions. Left-hand range has
symmetrical arrangement of windows over doorways flanking a
central loading doorway over doorway and similar loading
doorway over doorway on right (with threshing winnowing
doorway at rear). Left of this range is a double cartshed with
loft and rounded wall and leat wall at rear left. The other
front is symmetrical with central loading doorway (with rear
doorway opposite mill doorway) and 2 doorways to ground floor.
C20 boarded doors with original hinges. INTERIOR: floors of
barn partly removed; original nailed collar trusses. Cartshed
has 2 reused C17 chamfered hardwood joists probably from the
farmhouse (qv). This building is part of a planned group at
Methleigh ranged around a cobbled yard with central dung pit
(now infilled). The water supply system at Methleigh, serving
mill, farm buildings, house and gardens, is a considerable
feat of planning and engineering and is probably the most
complex of its kind in Cornwall.
