Description

BUCKFASTLEIGH

SX7466 CHURCH HILL
1011-1/7/6 (South side)
Stable and carriage house
immediately S of lych gate of Church
of Holy Trinity

GV II

Stable and carriage house, possibly designed for churchgoers,
now partly used as tractor shed. Mid C19: not on the 1839
tithe map. Local stone rubble with a hipped slate roof. Plan:
rectangular building sited close to the SW entrance to the
churchyard. Carriage house at the right (NW) end with 2
stables to the left. EXTERIOR: single-storey building with 2
doors to the left, a window alongside to the right and a gated
open bay to the far right. The stable doors have ovolo-moulded
and bolection moulded doorframes and stout plank doors with
large iron drop latches. 2-light shuttered window with a
bolection-moulded frame and 2-plank shutters with bead-moulded
planks. Pretty timber carriage-house gate with a diagonal
brace and splat verticals with shaped finials. INTERIOR:
carriage house has a plastered ceiling. Remainder not
accessible at time of survey but might retain fittings of
interest. Group value with the parish church (qv), which is
sited on a steep hill some distance from the town, and must
have required some provision for stabling during church
services.
