Description

BIDEFORD

SS4526 MARKET PLACE
842-1/6/159 (South side)
Nos.1, 2 AND 2A

GV II

Pair of terraces houses and shops combined into one. Now
occupies and island site bounded by Buttgarden Street on the
east and Honestone Street on the south; the remainder of this
side of Market Place has been demolished. Early or mid C19.
Solid rendered walls. Hipped slate roof.
3 storeys with basement and garret. Fronts of 2-window range
to No 1 and 1 window at No 2.
No 1 has shop front (probably late C19 with C20 alterations)
containing 2 display windows; between them and at left-hand
end a panelled pilaster supporting an entablature. No 2 has a
single display window of similar type. There may be an
entablature, concealed by a late C20 fascia; console survives
at right-hand end. Upper-storey windows have moulded
architraves. Those in second storey of No 1 are French windows
with glazing-bars and margin-panes; No 2 has 6-paned sashes in
this position. All third-storey windows have 2-paned sashes.
Openings in rear wall (fronting Honestone Street) have plain
raised surrounds, all but a round-arched stair window at No 1
having slightly pointed-headed lintels which project at either
end; stair window is tall with glazing-bars: 39 oblong panes
with radial bars at the top; beneath it a doorway with
panelled reveals, the left side with later boarding at the
bottom. 2 windows in second storey have 6-paned sashes; 1 in
ground storey probably has the same, although lower sash
boarded over. Openings in left side-wall match those at the
rear. Pilaster-strip at right-hand end. No openings in right
side-wall.
INTERIOR not inspected, but No 1 appears to retain the
original staircase with thin square balusters and continuous
handrail.
