House. C16 or early C17 altered C19. Originally timber framed with small
brick wing to LH. Main part refronted in brick with limestone dressing
in Jacobean style in C19. Tiled roof, large central stack with 4 diagonal
shafts. Second stack at LH end, lower part rubble greensand stone, upper
part brick and limestone with 3 diagonal walls. Stone coped gables, shaped
kneelers with finials. 2 storeys and cellar. S. front has 4 bays gable to
each. Projecting porch in 2nd bay from RH opposite main stack, with Tudor
arched doorway. 3 and 4 light stone mullioned casements with hoodmoulds.
Lower, older projecting gabled wing to LH, small bricks in English bond,
1 window to gable end. Rear elevation tile hung. Interior jowled posts and
wall framing visible at E end of 1st floor. Several C17 or earlier panelled
oak doors, 4 moulded stone fireplace surrounds, one only visible. History;
said to have been used as the County Assize Court. C19 renovation by Bedford
Estate, still the owners.
