Description

NORTH MOLTON HOLDRIDGE LANE
SS 72 NW
13/162 South Holdridge
- II
Farmhouse, now house. Late C17, with some probably late C19 alterations and further
minor late C20 alterations. Rendered over stone and cob. Gable-ended corrugated-
asbestos roof. Part of the rear wall at the right-hand end rebuilt in C20 blockwork.
Rendered stack.
Plan and development: Two-room central baffle-entry plan with staircase in lean-to
outshhut at rear of stack (site falls to left). Extra small room to right-hand end
(present kitchen). Lean-to outshut at rear of stack, right-hand room and kitchen,
that part to rear of stack at least is late C17. The thicker walls to the staircase
projection suggest that this part is contemporary with the rest of the house. The
lean-to outshut at the rear of the right-hand end appears to be a later addition
(note straight joint in right-hand gable end). The house could also be interpreted as
a heavy remodelling of earlier 3 room and cross-passage plan, with former service
room to left, stack inserted in former cross passage, hall to right and inner room
(present kitchen) to for right. However, apart from the plan, no evidence for this
survives. Two storeys with one-storey lean-to.
Exterior: Asymmetrically-fensetrated front; 3 first-floor windows, two C19 three-
light wooden casements to left and one C19 two-light wooden casements to right, and 2
ground-floor C19 three-light segmental-headed casements. Ground floor windows flank
C20 half-glazed door off-centre to left. C20 half-glazed door to right (kitchen
door). Both doorways with late C20 gabled porches. Left-hand of front of house is
set back from the rest. Outside w.c. adjoining right-hand gable end, with boarded
door.
Interior: Ground-floor rooms flanking stack have cambered chamfered cross beams and
half beams with scroll stops. Room to right of stack has open stone fireplace with
bread oven and C20 wooden lintel. Stairs to rear of stack. C17 chamfered doorframe
at head of stairs with mason's mistred joints and stops. Various old boarded doors
with strap hinges.
