Description

TWITCHEN
SS 7830-7930
17/217 Moorland View
-
GV II
House, possibly formerly part of larger house. Probably early C17, probably
remodelled in the mid-to late C19. Coursed stone rubble and cob. Cob to first floor
at front refaced in stone rubble in the C20. Some larger dressed stone quoins and
C19 brick dressings. Gable-ended asbestos-slate roof. Brick stacks.
Plan: Two-room central-entrance plan, facing south-east. External end stack to
larger principal right-hand room and integral end stack to smaller left-hand room.
The house is probably a remodelling of a (possibly larger) C17 house. The old front
doorway into the right-hand room was probably blocked when the present doorway was
probably inserted in the C19. Cranked rear wall. Two storeys.
Exterior: Roughly symmetrical front with 3 windows to first floor and 2 to ground
floor; late C20 two-light wooden casements, those to ground floor with concrete
lintels. Roughly central mid-C20 half-glazed door with wooden lintel and C19 gabled
porch on shaped brackets. Blocked doorway to right of present door (see straight
joints). Probably C18 central first-floor 2-light wooden casement lighting top of
stairs to rear.
Interior: C17 ceiling frame in right-hand ground-floor room consisting of chamfered
cross beam and chamfered joists with jewelled and angled straight-cut stops. Large
C17 open fireplace to right with dressed sandstone (large blocks) jambs and large
wooden lintel. C17 ceiling frame in left-hand ground-floor room with C17 deep-
chamfered cross beam and plain joists. C17 open stone fireplace to left with large
dressed blocks to right-hand jamb and chamfered wooden lintel with runout stops.
Central C19 staircase. Recess in end wall of right-hand bedroom, possibly former
window. Roof-space not inspected.
House undergoing building work at time of survey (October 1987).
