2.
A grand house for the centre of Ryde circa 1840 in a palazzo style. Three
storeys faced with stone coursed in imitation of bricks and with rendered
dressings and decorative details. Vermiculated pilasters flank the front,
the vermiculation being heavier on the ground floor. The facade is domi-
nated by a heavy dentil cornice. There are sill courses to the windows on
each floor and a stepped plinth with a rusticated band. Three windows.
On the second floor, recessed, sash, glazing bars intact, set in architrave
surrounds and with guttae grouped below sill cornice. The first floor or
piano nobile, has full length round headed recessed windows with modern
casements in their lower half. Flanked by their Doric pilasters with
architrave mouldings over. This surround is doubled on a broadecale
with a blind strip between. Each window has a blind balustrade its base
projecting from the sill course. The two ground floor windows are similar
to those on the first floor but with a flat entablature and guttae grouped
below the sill course. Both windows have cast iron Anthemion window
boxes. The centre of the ground floor is taken up by a heavy enclosed
stucco porch which slightly mars the palazzo effect. Engaged Doric
columns to the front and half pilasters to the wall. Frieze and cornice
with guttae. Balustrade above, the corner piers with ball finials. The
porch has recessed double doors with moulded panels, semi circular fanlight,
flanked by Doric pilasters with moulded arch over. The main front is
flanked by recessed blind bays with windows to side. The Eastern one is
rendered, the Western one of coursed rubble, with the cornice and sill
bands carried over from the main front, rusticated pilasters to the
Southern angles but brick quoins to the North.

Nos 2 to 7 (consec) form a group.
