House. Circa mid/late C18. Colourwashed rendered cob; thatched roof, gabled at
ends; end stacks with brick shafts. A single-depth 2-room plan house with heated
rooms on either side of a central passage which contains a stair at the rear. A rear
lean-to addition, partly in brick is probably late C19 although some cob sections
may be earlier. At the left-hand end of the range a single-storey cob addition with
thatched roof was formerly in use as a shop but has been converted as part of the
house accommodation. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window front and 1-room addition at
the left end under a slightly lower roof line. Large C20 thatched porch on posts
supported on solid walls; regular fenestration of 2-light C20 windows with top-hung
casements except for a 4-pane fixed window below a 6-pane fixed window. INTERIOR:
Pretty circa early C19 curved stair with stick balusters, a curved handrail and a
turned newel on the first floor. Ground floor room right has a rough cross beam and
slender exposed joists. Roof trusses said to be pegged, straight principals visible
in first floor rooms. Merrymeet is slightly set back from the main road through
Whites tone.
