GV II
Railway station and station-master's house. Dated 1847; for Wear Valley line
of Stockton and Darlington railway. Painted brick with ashlar-coped plinth
and dressings; roof of renewed stone slates, with brick and ashlar chimneys.
One storey, 3 bays, the central projecting. Boarded door in central bay has
elaborate iron hinges and handle; flat-Tudor-archedoverlight; tall stone
surround with alternate-block jambs. Tall 2-light stone-mullioned window in
half-dormer above under tall gable with stone shield bearing date. Flanking
bays have 3-light windows and 2-light half dormers in similar style. All
gables barge-boarded. Steeply-pitched roof has 2 ridge chimneys with tall
polygonal brick stacks on coped plinths. Right return to former platform has
canted bay with sloping stone-flagged roof.
