MANUDEN THE STREET
1.
5222
(west side)
Church of St Mary
the Virgin
TL 4926 45/525 21.2.67

II* GV

2.
A church, probably of C12 origin but largely demolished in 1863 and rebuilt
in 1864. A flint rubble wall with stone dressings. The west tower has
diagonal buttresses and a castellated parapet. The north transept is C15
and the roof of the north transept and nave are C15 with moulded and cambered
tie beams with crown posts with moulded caps and bases and curved braces.
There is a fine early C15 chancel screen with much carving and traceried
work. In the north transept there is a wall monument to Sir William Waad
(d 1623), in black stone and marble. The church occupies an important situation at
the focal point of the village. Graded for its topographical value and
internal features, particularly the C15 chancel screen. (RCHM 1).
