Gate piers and attached ha-ha wall. Circa 1824-5 by Thomas Harrison
of Chester for Sir Rowland Hill, fourth baronet of Hawkstone. Sandstone
ashlar with chamfered coping to wall. Gate piers at east end of terrace
both consist of 4 attached columns with moulded plinths and capping.
Ha-ha wall enclosing terrace paved with large cobblestones has 4-sided
bastions to angles. The architect's drawing, dated July 3, 1824, shows
that the wall was originally intended to have stepped buttresses at
angles. C.L. (August 21, 1958) pp.368-71.
