Description

TQ 53 NW SPELDHURST LEGGS LANE (off)

7/536 Shirley Hall

GV II

Large house, subdivided into flats. Probably early C19. Stuccoed with a
slate roof with lead rolls; stacks with yellow brick shafts.

Plan: East facing main block with an approximately square double depth plan
and an off centre entrance on the east side. Adjoining block on the north
side; single storey block, possibly a former billiard room, to the east,
facing south. Details of plan form unclear on survey as interior not
inspected.

Exeterior: Main block 2 storeys and attic; north wing 2 storeys; single-
storey billiard room. The main block has chamfered quoins, a moulded sill
band to the first floor and a platband below the eaves which are deep with a
moulded eaves cornice carried on paired shaped brackets. Moulded first floor
string interrupted by the windows. Ground and first floor windows glazed with
probably late C19/early C20 2-pane horned plate glass sashes. Hipped roofs.
Chimneyshafts with moulded cornices and trefoil panels to the ends.
Asymmetrical 4-bay east front, the entrance in the first bay from the left
which is broken forward with rusticated quoins. Ionic portico with paired
columns to the front and an entablature surmounted by a parapet with sections
of pierced circles with interlocking mouldings. 2-leaf front door with 4-
panel leaves, the upper panels glazed with decorative leaded glass.
Pilastered doorcase with ornate consoles, flanked by similar glazed panels.
The ground floor windows have moulded cornices on consoles and recesses below
the sills. The first floor windows have moulded architraves and segmental
pediments except the window over the porch which is a tripartite sash with a
floating cornice over the centre light. 4 first floor pedimented dormers
glazed with 4-pane sashes. 5-bay symmetrical south return, the centre 3 bays
broken forward with chamfered quoins. The ground floor windows match those on
the east front with a central French window, the 3 centre openings with
consoles supporting a continuous cornice that forms a shallow balcony to the
first floor windows, the balcony balustrade matching the porch parapet. The 3
centre first floor windows have segmental arches and eared architraves in
stucco, the architraves rising as nowy-headed panels over the lintels. Outer
first floor windows with segmental pediments. Attic dormers as on the east
front, triple attic dormer in the centre. The rear (north) elevation of the
main block is 7 bays, plainer in character with double and triple dormers and
3 axial stacks of various sizes. The 2-bay east elevation of the north wing
has a parapet and 2 windows with segmental pediments. In front of it a 5-bay
conservatory divided by Ionic pilasters with tall, paired round-headed windows
to each bay. Steps up to a central doorway with a 2-leaf door in a matching
style. Parapet matches that on the porch; glazed roof behind. The billiard
room wing is 3 bays with a fourth bay at the junction with the north wing.
Moulded cornice below the parapet supported on consoles. Steps up to a
central French window.

Interior: Not available for inspection at time of survey but features of
interest may survive.
