Lodging house, now flats. c1890, restored c1980. By WG and AS
Penty for The York Coffee House Company. Red brick in English
garden-wall bond with moulded brick dressings; timber entrance
screen, and prominent eaves frieze and cornice of moulded
timber and plaster; Westmorland slate roof with brick cornice
stacks.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic; 5-window front. 3-bay central
entrance screen beneath full-width moulded brick cornice,
framed in sunk-panel pilasters supporting dentil cornice:
glazed and panelled double doors between cambered-headed plate
glass windows beneath full-width moulded transom and
small-pane overlights. To left, two 18-pane sash windows with
moulded sills and cambered arches. Windows finished with
wrought-iron guards. To right, square-headed carriage arch
with dentilled cornice and board gate incorporating band of
turned balusters. Second floor windows are tall 18-pane sashes
with moulded stone sills and alternately triangular and
segmental pediments broken by grooved dropped keyblocks capped
by ball finials. Gabled half dormers have 12-pane sash windows
with stone sills beneath moulded cornice lintels. Ornate
rainwater goods between dormers.
