GV II

House. 1752-1755. Erected by Robert Clough (builder). Brick in
Flemish bond with painted stone dressings and an 'M' roof
which is slated at the front and pantiled at the rear.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attic and 4 bays. The facade has a
plinth, ground and first floor sill bands, 2 storey bands, and
a timber cornice gutter. The windows are glazing bar sashes
with rubbed brick flat arches. The right-hand window on the
ground floor, like those on the 2nd floor, has exposed sash
boxes and is probably a reconstruction. Towards the left there
is a C20 flat-roofed attic dormer. The 3rd bay contains an
early C19 doorcase which has pilasters with sunken panels and
a pediment. The door has 8 raised and fielded panels and the
overlight is plain and rectangular. Gable chimneys.
INTERIOR: not inspected. Recorded by RCHM as containing a main
staircase which has 3 balusters to each tread, swept at the
foot of the stair in a cluster round the newel, and a
staircase window flanked by Roman Doric Pilasters, with
decorated plasterwork above. The servants' staircase was
recorded an having closed strings, turned balusters, and
square newels.
