Description

DOWN ST MARY DOWN ST MARY
SS 70 SW
2/167 Radford Headstone approximately
- 10 metres east of north aisle of
Church of St Mary

GV II

Headstone. Dated 1865 in memory of Christian Illey Radford. Bath stone and
volcanic stone enriched with polychrome mosaic. Upright stone standing
approximately 0.9 metres high. Gothic style. It comprises a tapering shaft with
round head with moulded edges. It stands on a volcanic stone base which stops the
moulded surround on either side. The head has a raised circle enclosing a raised
cross pommee in outline which contains geometric patterns of inlaid polychrome
mosaic. The shaft is inscribed with Gothic lettering and records the death of
Christian Illey Radford in 1865. The lettering is very worn although sore retain
traces of red paint.
This is one of a series of unusual headstones in the churchyard which are
distinguished by their use of polychrome mosaic. They are obviously the result of
the Rev. W T A Radford's interest in craftmanship.
