Description

SS 90 NW BICKLEIGH BICKLEIGH
5/28 Hayridge
-
GV II
House. C17 with circa early C20 extension. Whitewashed and rendered ; thatched roof
adjoining Wells Place at the left end, half-hipped to the front of the right
crosswing ; 2 axial stacks.
Plan: The relationship between this building and Wells Place (q.v.) adjoining at the
left is not entirely clear. A blocked doorway between the properties at first floor
level indicates that at one time at least the left end of Hayridge and the right end
of Wells Place were one property. This may not be part of the C17 arrangement,
however, and could date from a subsequent sub-division of the range into small
cottages. The plan form is single depth with 2 heated rooms at the left and a circa
early C20 crosswing added at the right end. There is no clear evidence of the
position of the C17 doorway although there has been a doorway into the right hand C17
room on the front (now blocked). The house is now entered on the front at the left.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2 window front, C20 front door to left. C19 and C20 timber
casements with small panes.
Interior Both the C17 rooms have chamfered axial beams with scroll stops. The left
hand room has a fireplace with stone jambs and a replaced lintel. There are some
traces of a former newel adjacent to the stack. The right hand room has a C20 grate,
possibly concealing earlier features. When the crosswing was added an angle
fireplace was added using the right hand C17 stack.
Roof: The roofspace over the right hand end of the C17 range has no main truss but
pegged rafters, probably of an C18 date.
With Wells Place Hayridge forms a good thatched group adjacent to the road.
