Description

SS 72 NW CHITTLEHAMPTON HIGH STREET (north side)
Chittlehampton
1/138 Nos. 1 and 2 Barley Mow Cottages
- (Formerly listed as pair of
20.2.67 cottages on north side occupied by Mrs Short and Mr Phillips)
Mrs Short and Mr Phillis)
GV II

Pair of cottages. Probably late C18, remodelled in late C19. Rendered stone rubble
and cob. Half-hipped thatch roof with shared rear lateral stone rubble stack.
Slate roofs to rear kitchen wing and outshut, the latter with rear lateral stone
rubble stack with brick shaft.
Plans: originally mirror plan pair of cottages with adjacent parlour/kitchens
sharing stack to fireplaces across the rear angles, both originally with bread ovens
and small outer service rooms with staircases at rear. Internal partition removed
in C20 to left-hand cottage, but the C19 winder staircase survives in its original
position. A 2 storey rear kitchen wing was added in late C19. The right-hand
cottage retains its internal partition but the staircase is housed in the 1½ storey
rear kitchen outshut added probably in early C19.
2 storeys. 4-window range. Symmetrical. Late C19 fenestration with 2 light
casements, 4 panes per light, the topmost pane divided into 6 smaller panes. Only
the ground floor window at left end has been replaced with a 2-light casement, 2
panes per light. Central brick porch to each cottage with chamfered quoins
corbelled out to support leanto roofs with fishscale patterned clay tiles. C19
plank doors.
Interior: the principal fireplaces have rounded backs and plain timber lintels. C19
staircases and some joinery survives. 3 roof trusses with straight principals
halved and pegged at the apex with trenched purlins and lapped collars.
Barleymow Cottages formed part of the Rolle Estate, the late C19 external treatment
being typical of many of the buildings in its ownership. The cottages are said to
have been at one time an alehouse.
