Offices. 1882. By Charles Hansom. Random limestone ashlar,
ashlar exterior stack and a slate hipped mansard roof.
Single-depth plan. Jacobethan style with Renaissance style
details.
4 storeys and attic; 4-window range. A sharp corner site with
matching front and rear and canted 1-window corner, has shop
fronts with granite plinths to plain piers and plate glass,
and a modillion cornice. Upper floors articulated by pilasters
through cornices at each floor which break forward over the
pilasters, to a fluted frieze and dentil cornice, with
panelled dies to a balustrade. Semicircular-arched left-hand
doorway has Gibbs architrave and incised voussoirs, a key with
a carved face and 4-panel door, and GLASS CHAMBERS incised
above. The pilasters have first-floor panels with foliate
decoration, round panels to the second floor with busts, and
first-floor niches to the canted section containing historical
Bristol figures. Windows with ovolo mouldings in chamfered
surrounds, narrow transom windows over the doorway and cross
windows to the rest, with casements and stained glass over the
transom on the first and third floors. Similar rear elevation
divided by an exterior stack with quoins and a cornice;
right-hand section has lower stair lights. Gabled dormers.
INTERIOR: a lobby to a stone cantilevered dogleg stair across
the side of the site, with paired cast-iron balusters and
fluted newel. Fills an important corner site overlooking the
centre.
