Shipping warehouse, conversion in progress at time of survey.
1874, by Speakman, Son and Hickson, for textile merchant Sam
Mendel; altered. Red brick with sandstone dressings, slate
roof. Irregular plan on island site between Chepstow Street,
Great Bridgewater Street and course of former Salford Junction
canal. Eclectic style. Three storeys, basement and attic, a
long south-east facade, the left end canted back along Great
Bridgewater Street; with sandstone plinth, 1st-floor
sill-band, eaves cornice, semi-octagonal angle-oriel with
domed turret, and steeply-pitched roof with numerous gabled
dormers; a large round-headed doorway in the centre of the
main range, moulded in 2 orders, with shafts, set in a gabled
surround with Lombard frieze, a large segmental-headed loading
doorway to the right with cast-iron surround, a similar
loading doorway next to the left corner (now with glazed
screen) and another at left end of the canted portion; to the
left of the main entrance, a very large 2-stage 3-light window
with shafts; stilted and shouldered windows to the oriel,
which has lancets to the attic stage and an open-arcaded stone
cupola with domed roof; 3-light windows at ground and 1st
floors of main range, otherwise most windows coupled and now
furnished with tilting casements imitating sashes. Small
dormers with 2-light windows and coped gables, larger dormers
with 3-light windows and coped gables with kneelers and
finials. Interior not inspected.
