House. Early C18, possibly by Francis Smith. Chequer brick with stone
dressings, hipped tiled roof with concealed valley and central brick
chimney with offset and moulded head, moulded box cornice with stone
bedmould. 2 storeys and attic, stone plinth and 1st floor band. S. front
of 5 bays, narrow window openings with flat gauged brick arches
and carved beyblocks, modern sashes 3 panes wide, central bay of stone
with 6-panelled door in architrave surround with keyblock small cornice
and open scroll pediment. Above the door the Window is in a carved stone
surround with dolphins at the head and side scrolls nesting on the capping
mould of the plain stone apron. (Stone carving by one William Oldfield,
who also did the carving on the chancel of Chicheley Church) Flank
elevations of 3 bays, some windows blocked, N. elevation irregular with
large central arched staircase window. Interior: has the original staircase,
rising the whole height of the house, with turned balusters and moulded
handrail. Some original panelled doors. Otherwise altered. One house is said
to have been a Dower House to Chicheley Hall.
