Description

LYNTON AND LYNMOUTH

SS7149 THE ESPLANADE, Lynmouth
858-1/4/84 (South side)
03/09/73 Esplanade Lime Kilns
(Formerly Listed as:
LYNTON
THE ESPLANADE
Lime Kilns)

II

Lime kilns. Probably late C18. Whitewashed rubble,
earth-covered roof. The kiln is in the form of a double
bastion, connected at the left-hand end by a broad flight of
steps with the Pavilion (not included). There are 2 broad
conjoined openings to the N with flat segmental voussoir heads
over the deep hearths, which are partly filled by later
masonry; a small square flue-hole leads out from one of these.
There is a 3rd hearth to the left, and a 4th on the E return,
now partly covered by the steps, and a 5th to the right,
facing W. The top of the kilns forms part of a promenade, and
is enclosed by the upper walls of the kiln with on-edge
copings at approx 0.4-0.9m above earth level.
HISTORICAL NOTE: as for much of the N coast here, there was
always a call for lime, especially for use on the local acid
soils, and a regular trade across the Severn estuary from S
Wales existed from early times, until the advent of railways.
This kiln carries an information plate suggesting that it is
'...approximately 200 years old...'; Chanter refers to a date
of grant in 1698.
