Bank. 1845-6, by C.R.Cockerell; altered. Sandstone ashlar with
Portland stone plinth and parapet, slate roof. Rectangular
plan on end-of-block site. Monumental classical style. Three
storeys over basement, 5 bays, symmetrical; with a plinth
interrupted by basement-area railings, channelled rustication
except at 2nd floor, a giant colonnade of engaged Doric
columns to the ground and 1st floors with entablature and
triglyph frieze breaking forwards over the 3-bay centre
(forming a balcony which has hooped railings), pilastered 2nd
floor with prominent cornice (projected over each pilaster),
and a central 3-bay pediment. The 3-bay centre has giant
round-headed arches with moulded imposts, run-out voussoirs
and keystones, the centre containing a late C19 inserted
square headed doorway with enriched architrave and the outer
containing tripartite windows with pilastered surrounds and
protected by spear-railings, and all with Diocletian windows
to 1st floor. The outer bays and the 2nd floor have windows
with moulded architraves, except that in the centre of the 2nd
floor which is in free Venetian form with engaged columns and
radiating tympanum. The left return side (to Pall Mall), 3
bays in simpler form, has the original doorway in the centre,
in a large round-headed arch with emphatically rusticated
surround and voussoirs. Interior altered.
