Description

BICKINGTON
SX 87 SW
8/5 Chipley Mill
23.4.86
GV II

Outbuilding, formerly a mill. Probably C19. Stone rubble; quoins and window-
dressings in east gable are of squared Devonian limestone. Asbestos-slated roof.
2 storeys. East gable has large inserted cart entrance with red brick jambs to
right; small window to left. 3 windows with 2-light casements in second storey.
Single window in apex of gable. South front has doorway with plank door at right-
hand end, well above ground level. In second storey are 8 windows with 2-light
wood casements. Interior not inspected. Mill and house (q.v.) make a good group.
Both are shown on the 1841 tithe map, the mill being described in the schedule as a
bone mill owned by John Milward and occupied by William Law, who also lived in the
house (Devon Record Office). The mill is described as a disused bone mill on the
25-inch Ordnance Survey Map of 1905. Neither the mill nor the house is shown on
the 2-inch Ordnance Map of 1803-4 (information from Mr L Keefe, Teignbridge
District Council).
