GV II

Institute including library and clock tower. 1883-4. Coursed
and dressed granite; stone-coped Welsh slate roof; stone end
stacks. L-plan with clock tower to south-west angle. 2
storeys. 3-window first-floor range to Institute Hill. Horned
4/4-pane narrow sashes set in 2-light square-headed
ground-floor windows with chamfered jambs; first floor has
horned 2/2-pane sash with chamfered jambs flanked by gabled
half dormers with horned 3/3-pane sash. Elevation to Cliff
Road has similar narrow sashes in similar 2-light windows
flanking full-height canted bay window with similar sashes;
porch to right end wall with plank door and moulded kneelers
to lean-to roof. 3-stage clock tower has hoodmould over
chamfered pointed-arched doorway and Caernarvon-arched window
to battered lower stage; middle stage has tall paired lancets;
upper stage, housing clocks to each face, is corbelled out and
has crenellated parapet; spire clad in sheet copper (1991).
INTERIOR: plain with panelled doors. Subsidiary features: wall
curves round from clock tower to front Institute Hill
elevation.
