Description

ST BRIAVELS STOWE HILL
SO 50 NE
(south side)
2/187 Stowe Grange
- II
Farmhouse. C16 and C19. Rough rendered, Welsh slate roof. This is the original
farmhouse with stair turret centrally at back, 2-storey porch centrally front, and
two large external gable stacks, each with paired diagonal terminal shafts in brick.
Attached to this, front left, is a later 2-storey cottage set gable to the road.
Main block is 3 storey with part cellar, right, 3-windowed, but the first bay
blocked by the later building, centre a 3-light casement over C19 plank door and
surround, and right are 4-light casements and a segmental headed doorway; the
windows under crude drips and stop. Left of porch is a 4-centred door opening with
moulded surround. Back has 4-light wood C19 casements in two storeys, flanking
stair turret with 2-light casement, also one C20 door. Cottage front is two storeys
3-windowed, 2-light C19 casements over one 5-light and one 2-light with transom,
and off-centre left a 4-panel C19 door. Interior: Many very heavy chamfered beams,
and heavy roof structure; the cellar has enormous beams and stopped-chamfer joists.
Deep bressummer fireplaces at ground floor and first floor at right-hand end. Oak
tight well stair. The farmhouse is reputed to date from 1563, which is possible
in view of the heavy and relatively crude detailing in parts.
