Description

WILLAND WILLAND
ST 01 SW
2/277 Dye House
- II
Detached house, possibly originally a farmhouse, later subdivided, and at one time
(apparently) used as a dye factory. C17 and later. Plastered cob, stone footings,
gabled-end thatched roof. A distinct vertical joint in the fabric beneath the axial
stack, suggests 2 builds, or a rebuild. Original plan is not easily reconstructed. It
may be an adapted and partially rebuilt 3-room, cross-passage plan, the axial stack
(heating the hall) now part of the right-hand room of the left-hand cottage. 2-storeys.
Front: 4-window range; all C19 3-light casement windows to first floor, lintels at
eaves level; four 2 and 3-light casement windows to ground floor, that of 3-lights C19,
the others later. 2 front-doors. 1 roughly hewn ceiling beam visible internally, but
interior not inspected.
