Description

SX 69 SW BELSTONE BELSTONE

3/6 3 Underhill headstones
approximately 1 metre south of
south aisle of Church of St Mary
GV II

3 adjacent headstones set in a row dated 1748, 1753 and 1758 and in memory of
members of the Underhill family. All are upright slabs of granite standing
approximately 600mm high facing west and are inscribed with Roman serif upper and
lower case lettering. The right end one has a segmental head and was erected in
memory of the unnamed daughter of Richard and Charity Underhill who died in 1748.
The middle one is round-headed with a winged cherubs head at the top. It
commemorates the death of Charity Underhill in 1753. The left one is segmental-
headed and it too has a winged cherubs head at the top and records the death of
Richard, son of Richard Underhill, presumably Charity's husband.
