Shop with living accommodation over; rear part is now a separate house. Late C16
or C17. Solid walls, aprtly partly the central section of the south wall is of
exposed stone rubble. East gable covered with asbestos slates. Asbestos slate
roof, hipped at rear. On south wall, towards the east end is a tall granite ashlar
chimneystack of late C16 or C17, with offsets, weatherings (one of these clearly
designed for a thatched roof) and tapered top. At west end of south wall a
projecting, rendered stack with offsets. On roofslope a little to the east of this,
a pair of rendered stacks. A long, narrow-fronted house that must originally have
been at least 3 rooms deep; it is not clear whether the original entrance was in
Town Hall Place or Fore Street. 2 storeys. Front to Town Hall Place has a single
window in second storey, this having a C20 2-light casement. Late C19 shop front in
ground storey with glazing canted into entrance and divided by wooden shaft with cap
and base, answered by responds, the right- hand section C20; 4-pane wood casement
window in gable. South front has irregular fenestration. Right-hand, rendered
section has a small, late C19 display window in ground storey. Central rubble stone
section has glazed door to left with small window beside it on left-hand side. To
right of this is a 3-light wood window under a segmental arch of yellow brick; outer
lights are 6-paned, centre light altered in C20. Above, in second storey, are 2
wood casement windows of different heights; left-hand window is of 3 lights, right-
hand window of 4 lights, both with 3 panes per light. Left-hand section (No. 82
Fore Street) has been almost wholly altered in C20 and has been given a hard render.
Glazed door to right with 2-pane window beside it; to left of ground storey an
older 2-light wood casement with 2 panes per light. A C20 window to right of second
storey.
Interior not inspected. Local information is that a large, old open fireplace
exists in the room behind the shop, possibly now covered up. There are probably
other features of interest inside, possibly also covered up.
