Present house early Cl9, on site of residence of Anna Laetitia Aikin, later Mrs
Barbauld, poetess, who lived here 1758-74 (tablet on cast iron gateway, erected
1911). 2 storeys, brick with slate roof, stone parapet and cornice. Centre
entrance with porch of detached Roman Doric columns and cornice, 6-panel door
and round-arched fanlight with glazing bars. Windows are 12 and 9-paned, restored
casements resembling sashes, with flat brick heads and stone sills.
Building dated 1817, Nos 2 to 6 (even) form a group with Cross Keys Public House
Nos 80 to 84 (even). Roman Catholic Church of St Mary Trustee Savings Bank and
No 95, Buttermarket Street.
