Description

SW 63 SW BREAGE

4/12 Stile at approx 30m west of
Pengelly Barton Farmhouse

GV II

Stile. Probably C18. Dressed granite stile stones, ashlar gate piers and rubble
side walls with granite ridge copings.
Plan: the stile is in the form of a long narrow corridor with high side walls and a
stile at either end. The principal stile is a cattle grid franked by square-on-plan
piers; the other end has a stile with open steps.
Surmounting each pier is a freestone urn-like finial with 4 scrolled lugs with
acanthus decoration and a domed lid surviving over the middle of one of the urns.
This stile is similar to those at Godolphin Hall qv. and there are some other more
modest examples at the entrances to some of the local farmhouses.
