SX 86 NW BROADHEMPSTON -
The Retreat

House. Circa 1840/50. Stuccoed brick as stone with rusticated quoins.
Bitumerised scantle slate roof with gabled end and deep bracketed eaves.
Brick chimney stacks at gable ends.
Plan: double depth plan with 2 principal front rooms with a central entrance
hall and probably rear service rooms.
Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. Symmetrical 3 bay front with original windows;
16 pane sashes and narrower central first floor 12 pane rails; all have
stone sills. Central doorway with a rectangular overlight, C19 paralled
door and a late C19 or early C20 glazed wooden porch with shaped bargeboards
and a finial in the gable. The attic windows are 2 small bullseyes with
radial glazing bars in each gable end, an unusual feature.
The rear elevation may have original penetration.
Interior: not inspected but probably contains its C19 joinery including
its staircase.
