Description

WITHERIDGE WEST STREET (north side)
SS 81 SW Witheridge
9/108 No.16 (Lynecroft)
-
20.2.67
GV II
Cottage. Probably late C15 or early later C16, addition to right of C16, C19 and
C20 refenestration. Rubble and cob, roughcast and colourwashed, hipped thatched
roof.
Plan and development: the cottage is the inner room of a 3-room and through-passage
house and a later C16 addition to the right making it into a 2-room plan. Probably
originally an open hall house.
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 2 bays, first floor with 2 C19 casements with
glazing bars. Further C19 casement on the ground floor. 2 C20 casements to right
of ground floor, horizontal glazing bars. Inset door opening to extreme left, half-
glazed door.
Interior: 2 rooms on the ground floor, one with a chamfered lateral ceiling beam,
the other room divided in half in the C20. The first floor is virtually featureless
except there is a very good example of a hip cruck to be seen, it is not known if
this is smoke-blackened or not.
The hall and lower end of this house is occupied by the adjoining house to the left,
No.18 (Plovers Barrows)(q.v.)
