Description

SAMPFORD PEVERELL WHITNAGE ROAD, Sampford Peverell
ST 01 SW
8/158
- Lime kilns at Pretty Bench Quarry
- II
Lime kilns. C19. Local sandstone conglomerate rubble. Triple draw kiln with 3
draught tunnels facing south-west. Each tunnel has a low elliptical outer arch and
similar lower inner relieving arch. The draw pits are enclosed by rusted iron bars.
The front wall rises to the remains of a rubble parapet. The kiln pits have been
infilled to avoid danger to stock. At the right (south-east) end is a leanto
storage room now missing its roof. At the back (north-west) the new road works
impinge very closely on the kiln and conceal that side and any evidence of a loading
ramp.
The kiln is reported to have been operating as a lime kiln up to circa 1920.
