Description

SX 68 NE CHAGFORD

3/71 Studio Cottage
-
GV II

Cottage. Early-mid C19, possibly earlier core. Granite stone rubble with dressed
quoins; brick stacks; thatch roof.
Plan: 2-room plan cottage facing east. The larger right (northern) room has a corner
stack projecting from the right end and also contains the stairs. The left room lies
behind an entrance lobby. It is the kitchen with an axial stack backing onto the
stairs. There is a tradition that the cottage was converted from the C17 stables
belonging to Court Cottage (q.v.) which adjoins the left (southern) end of the house.
It is now a cottage ornee. 2 storeys.
Exterior: balanced but not symmetrical 3-window front. The central ground floor
window and all three on the first floor are original casements with pointed heads and
Y tracery glazing bars and contain diamond panes of leaded glass and narrow margin
panes. The 3-light casement ground floor right, and the doorway with side light
ground floor left are C20 replacements. Slate monopitch hood on plain timber
brackets extends across the front from the left end to the central window. This
central window appears to be blocking a former doorway. Roof butts Court Cottage
(q.v.) to left and is half-hipped to right.
Interior has plain C19 joinery detail. No structural carpentry is exposed. Roof
not inspected.
Studio Cottage is one component of the attractive and varied group of listed
buildings which make up the hamlet of Thorn.
