Description

BRADFORD
SS 40 SW

9/28 West Flairs Farmhouse
-

GV II

Farmhouse. Probably early - mid C17 although it may have earlier origins, partly
rebuilt in C19. Plastered cob and stone rubble walls apart from rear and right-hand
end walls rebuilt in brick. Corrugated iron roof over thatch, hipped to left end
gabled to right. Brick stack at right gable-end and brick rear lateral stack.
Plan: not entirely clear due to lack of internal access but has all the signs of
being 3 rooms with a through or cross-passage. Lower end apparently to left and
unheated, hall heated by rear lateral stack and inner room by gable-end stack.
There is a window bay at the front either of the inner room or the higher end of the
hall. In circa later C19 the rear wall and right end wall appear to have been
substantially rebuilt. A C20 lean-to was added behind the right-hand end.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front of C19 and early C20 2 and 3-
light casements, some with small panes. Slightly projecting window bay towards
right-hand end with window on each floor. Adjoining it to right is C20 lean-to
porch. Larger lean-to porch to left of centre with C19 plank door behind. C20
lean-to behind right-hand end.
Interior: inaccessible at time of survey but may contain features of interest such
as early ceiling beams, open fireplaces and roof timbers.
