10/53 Wooda Cottage

Cottage incorporating outbuilding, possibly bakery. C18, restored mid C20. Render over
rubble and cob, thatched roof, double Roman tiles to lean-to porch, rendered stack with
brick cap at junction of cottage and outbuilding, stack to left gable end fireplace
removed. Plan: 2-cell and cross passage opening into central staircase, outbuilding now
partitioned to include bathroom, site slopes away at cottage end. Cottage: 2 storeys, 3
bays, 2-light late C19 casements flanking central fixed light stairwindow, simlar ground
floor flanking porch with plank door. Outbuilding single storey with two 2-light
casements and C20 glazed door end bay right. C20 terracotta mask below right window.
Left return gable end rubble buttress or truncated chimneystack; C20 window inserted on
rear elevation. Interior: chamfered lintel to fireplace in room to left of entrance,
horizontal boarding to wide staircase, partly renewed, exposed joists in both rooms,
fireplace in righthand room rebuilt, entrance cut through beside the fireplace to the
outbuilding which contains large open fireplace with bread oven and chamfered lintel.
The bathroom is inserted into this outbuilding which is otherwise open to the roof; the
latter has been rebuilt, 4 pairs of collarbeam trusses visible in cottage. The evolution
and function of the outbuilding in relation to the cottage is not clear.
