SX 48 SE CORYTON

Maltings, disused. Late C19. Stone rubble with hipped slate roofs. Rectangular
malthouse has stone cornice below eaves, kiln adjoins malthouse at south west forming
L-plan. 3-storey malthouse, 2-storey kiln. Entrance at west, 2 + 1-window front.
Entrance on front of malthouse at right. 1 blocked window to left of door, one 2-
light window to kiln. 2 first floor windows to malthouse, 1 blocked, one 2-light
first floor window to kiln. 1 second floor 2-light window to malthouse. Some leaded
panes to windows. North side of malthouse has 2 and 1-light windows with iron
stanchions and external shutters.
Interior: Floor of second floor of malthouse missing, first floor plastered. Kiln
has furnace with coved brick flue and square perforated kiln tiles to drying floor.
The maltings is on the main road through Coryton parish and is south of the now
disused Coryton slate quarry. Immediately adjacent to the maltings is the spoil heap
from lime kilns and the side may have been a semi-industrial complex on the Coryton
estate.
